Tmoney or Climate Card: coverage, short passes and top-ups

Choose rechargeable Tmoney for flexible trips beyond Seoul; consider a short-term Climate Card only when your stations and buses are covered and the pass dates fit. Seoul says 30-day prepaid recharges ended on August 31, 2026; existing cards still accept 1-, 2-, 3-, 5- and 7-day passes.

Before you choose

  1. List your boarding and exit stations, not just “Seoul”. Check Seoul’s service-range list: the Sinbundang Line, airport buses and non-Seoul-licensed buses are excluded. Some rail sections have exit-only exceptions. Tmoney is pay-per-journey; check the actual service’s acceptance.
  2. Match the pass to your riding days. Short-term validity starts on the recharge date, not an arbitrary later travel day. The new resident Climate Pass has residence and registration conditions; do not treat it as the same tourist prepaid pass.
  3. Separate buying a card from loading it. Overseas cards work for short Climate passes at supported new machines; this is not a promise for every Tmoney card or kiosk. Carry cash for cash-only top-ups, check the machine’s payment instructions, and tap both on and off.

Questions before you go

Can I board at Incheon Airport with a Climate Card?
No. Seoul lists an AREX exception allowing exit at Incheon T1/T2 after boarding within the covered area, but not boarding at T1/T2. Airport buses are excluded. Arrange a separate payment for the arrival journey and confirm the current range before departure. Sources: Seoul · Climate Card
Can I top up with a foreign credit card everywhere?
No. Seoul and Tmoney describe overseas-card support for short Climate passes at supported new machines. Other cards and machines have different rules; some top-up machines are cash-only. Check your card type and the exact machine before relying on it. Sources: Tmoney
