Restaurant waitlist in Korea without a Korean phone number: what to do on the spot
Ask the staff first: many busy restaurants run an on-site list, and some use online waitlists that may ask for a Korean number. For participating restaurants, KTO points visitors to Catchtable Global, which offers reservations and waitlists, with a separate restaurant page for each. Practices vary by restaurant and by day. If none of this works, use a lawful alternative: another time, another branch or another restaurant.

SourcesBefore you choose
- Before joining a crowd, look at the door or counter for a tablet, paper list or QR code, and ask the staff where to register. A short question is enough; point to the number of people with your fingers. Staff may tell you how they call guests, such as by name, number or at the door.
- If it is a Catchtable restaurant, search for it in Catchtable Global. The KTO guide lists a “Reservation link” or a “Waiting link” per restaurant and says Catchtable Global offers both reservations and waitlists. It was last updated September 2024, so confirm the button exists for your branch today. Not every restaurant joins; availability is the restaurant’s call.
- If a form insists on a Korean mobile number, do not invent one and do not use someone else’s without their clear consent. Ask staff whether they can note a name instead, whether a hotel or local friend’s number is acceptable with that person’s permission, or whether you can stay nearby and be called at the door. Entering a wrong number can drop you from the list.
- Agree the practical terms: party size, rough wait, how you will be called, and the latest time you can return. Stay within earshot or check the status page. A wait estimate is not a promise, and a waitlist spot does not fix your dining time. If you need to leave, tell staff so they do not hold your place.
- Have a backup. Try another branch, go off-peak, or ask a nearby restaurant for a walk-in. Say: 대기 등록하고 싶은데 한국 전화번호가 없어요. (I want to join the waitlist but have no Korean phone number.) 이름으로 불러 주실 수 있나요? (Could you call me by name?) 몇 분 정도 기다려야 하나요? (About how many minutes is the wait?) 다른 방법이 있을까요? (Is there another way?) For a general travel question you can call 1330, but it is not a booking service. KoreaPocket does not book or manage queues; community advice is optional peer help.
Questions before you go
- Can I use Catchtable Global without a Korean number?
- The KTO guide presents Catchtable Global as the way for visitors to reserve or join waitlists at participating restaurants. It is an external service, and its rules, supported languages and each restaurant’s participation can change. Check the restaurant’s own page instead of assuming. - Will a tourist SIM solve a Korean-number requirement?
- Not necessarily. LG U+ says a data-only eSIM has no SMS verification, while voice/SMS can receive codes for restaurant and taxi reservation apps. A given restaurant app may still not accept your number. Read your plan and test before you queue. Sources: LG U+ · Korea eSIM (data only) notice
- Is joining a waitlist the same as having a reservation?
- No. The KTO guide lists reservation links and waiting links separately, and a waitlist spot does not guarantee a table or time. Ask staff how long they hold a called place and what happens if you are late. Some restaurants may take only walk-ins. Sources: Korea Tourism Organization · Catchtable Global
