Taxi overcharged you in Korea? Check the receipt, then report safely
Even when paying cash, ask for a fare receipt (“영수증 주세요”). Check the printed boarding time, alighting time and total amount, then keep the receipt. If either time is missing, briefly note it yourself. Avoid arguing with the driver; if the fare seems wrong, ask 1330 or the local authority how to report it safely.

SourcesBefore you choose
- Before the ride, show your destination in Korean (use the address tool). Where an app booking is available to you, it can leave a record of the car and trip, but phone verification and payment eligibility for foreign visitors vary, so do not assume an app guarantees a fair fare. Never assume any one app prevents overcharging.
- A longer route alone does not prove fraud. Traffic, road closures, tolls and time or area surcharges can explain a higher fare. If something seems wrong, consider these before reporting it.
- Even when paying cash, ask for a printed fare receipt: “영수증 주세요” (yeongsujeung juseyo, “receipt, please”). Check the boarding time, alighting time and total amount printed on it, and keep it. If either time is absent, briefly note it yourself.
- Only if a discrepancy needs explaining, you may safely add a plate or receipt photo, a map or booking screenshot, or a short note about the route. These are optional extra evidence, not a routine checklist. Hide card numbers and personal details before sharing.
- If the fare still seems wrong, call 1330 (the Korea Travel Helpline, non-emergency) or ask the local authority or taxi operator for the correct complaint process. A Korean-speaking friend or helper may assist with consent, but there is no guarantee a third-party complaint will be accepted. If you feel threatened, call 112 instead.
- You can ask KoreaPocket or its community for help organising your notes and wording; a response or refund is not promised. They cannot file the complaint for you or act as an emergency service. Never post unredacted receipts, plates, faces or personal data publicly.
Questions before you go
- Does booking through Kakao or another app stop overcharging?
- Not as a guarantee. An app booking may keep a record of the trip, but eligibility for foreign phones and payment methods varies and fares can still differ from estimates. Keep your own notes and the receipt. Sources: Incheon Airport · Taxi Guide
- Can I call 1330 about a taxi dispute?
- The KTO lists 1330 as the Korea Travel Helpline, with Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese, Thai and Malay support. Use it for non-emergency help and ask which office handles taxi complaints. It is not emergency dispatch, and an outcome is not promised. - Is a long route always a scam?
- No. Traffic, closures, tolls and surcharges can change both the route and the fare. Check the receipt, time and what the driver said before concluding anything, and report factually rather than alleging fraud. Sources: Incheon Airport · Taxi Guide
